I'm in the library right now, and this laptop is behaving erratically. It's brand new, but it can't even keep up with my typing speed, so I have to stop and wait for my computer to think about what I'm doing so that I can see what I've typed. Not just that, but it's just behaving all-around slowly. I paid a good amount of money for this thing, maxed out the specs as far as processor and ram speed go, and it's no better than my last laptop? I don't get it. Is it this windows vista shit? Or do I have a shithead computer? It's an HP dv5z.

AMD Turion(TM) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-84 (2.3GHz)
4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphic
160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

I'm trying not to yell at this computer, as I normally do when I'm frustrated with technology. I do not like the quiet of the library.

What are you typing in? What program?

No, it shouldn't be doing that. I have issues with Vista on my new desktop, but all it does is sometimes not boot up; I have to reboot it and it comes right up. Otherwise, typing's not an issue that I've heard of...yet, anyway.

Typing in emails, on IFHY, etc.
I think it's all these programs that came with the computer. They all start themselves up when I turn the computer on. I need to figure out which ones are useless and can be removed.
I shut a couple of them off, and it seems to be working a little better, but that just might be temporary.
Also, music playing from iTunes was skipping.

This windows vista is way different than XP. I have a feeling I'm going to have to sit down for a while and familiarize myself with all of these extra little "services" and shit. It's like it's trying to make all my decisions for me, instead of letting me tell it what to do.

That's a good processor and a good bit of memory you have. Unless you have something like ten programs running in the background, it definitely shouldn't be acting retarded like that.

There's a lot of reasons it might run slow besides that, though. Check out this:

It's a pretty good article on ways to optimize your system in Vista.

Vista does take some getting used to, but I'm starting to like it a bit better than XP. I really DIDN'T want a new computer because I didn't want Vista; I was ready to shell out a few hundred extra bucks to get XP, but wanted the better gaming PC.

That's a good article. Thanks for the tip. I'm in the process of removing superfluous bullshit right now.

AV can definitely be an issue.

One thing I've noticed also with Vista is that Firefox has a really annoying habit of crashing. A lot.
