Liquid courage upsets lady friends.
We went out for a friend's birthday. We drank decently and went to IHOP. Some friends joined us. They happened to be gay. We dealt with the worst service we've ever dealt with, but we made the best of it. As we left, I overheard someone talking shit about one of our gay friends. I stood up for him. Not in their face and direct, but loudly and angrily enough that they could hear and understand exactly who I was yelling about/at. Then I got yelled at for doing that because I didn't know who these people were and they could have wanted to fight or do harm to one of us or whatever.
And now I'm pissed because I got yelled at for semi doing what I thought was right. I didn't get too confrontational. I just voiced my displeasure. It was along the lines of "Word? We just get to talk shit about anyone who fucking walks by now?" They got quiet, I got angrily hushed. I paid for our meal and we left.
I still don't think I did anything wrong, but I'm also in the doghouse. Guess I don't know much.

You were completely in the right. The shit'll blow over, but you did good. Was it more dangerous than being meek, sure, but I bet you feel better about yourself than you would've otherwise.
